Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that February 15 is the anniversary of the birth of retired United States Navy admiral and the current dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University James George Stavridis who serves as the chief international diplomacy and national security analyst for NBC News in New York.
Happy Birthday James G. Stavridis with many happy returns!

Admiral James Stavridis: Sea Power: The History and Geopolitics of the World's Oceans
"From the time when the ancient Greeks and the Persians clashed in the Mediterranean, sea power has determined world power. Naval power has been a driver of human history and a crucial element in our current geopolitical path. Admiral James Stavridis takes us with him on a tour of the world’s oceans from the admiral’s chair, showing us how the geography of the oceans has shaped the destiny of nations.
Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.) spent over 35 years on active service in the Navy, including nearly four years as the first Navy officer chosen as supreme allied commander for global operations at NATO. After retiring from the Navy Stavridis was named the dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 2013."

Yeah, I served under him at SOUTHCOM. Wasn't impressed with certain aspects of his leadership. In fact, I dealt with more cyber related issues during his command than I did with the next Commander, who took our expert advise more to heart. Adm Stavridis ignored the constant recommendations to have cell phones removed from the HQ building, his comm team continuously submitted several insecure requirements, and his reorg of the command left us (i.e. the DoD as a whole) in a major state of confusion, which was fortunately corrected by the next commander, a few months into his command, when the earthquake in Haiti took place. I remember all too well getting requests from one of his civilian SESs, demanding technology we could not support or secure properly, which would also require us to revert our security standards to meet her needs. All so she could have a tablet like device which could fit in her purse (i.e. convenience... Remind you of someone? It should).

My experiences during Adm Stavridis' command taught me a lot about the sense of entitlement many of our most senior leaders tend to have when it comes to tech toys. I have used those experiences to highlight the reasons why I know Clinton acted in a negligent and even illegal manner as Sec State. It makes complete sense to me that Adm Stavridis would be considered for Clinton's VP. This is not to say he would have subscribed to acting illegally or immorally, I just felt that he didn't understand the magnitude of the security implications, and had no problem looking the other way when it came to making things easier for him and his staff. This might have been based on bad advice from his staff (certainly not our J6 at the time whom understood my advice to him), or his desire to push the envelope. I had very little insight into what they would discuss at the flag officer level and it's not like my J6 at the time is going to speak ill to his subordinate officer about our Commander. At the same time you don't get to that level by playing everything safe. But in his case, he was headed down a really bad path had he joined the Clinton ticket.

That's what happens when ego gets involved, sadly.
