Thanks TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on February 14, 1988 a USA team favorite to win the gold medal in the 500-meter race at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, U.S. speed skater Dan Jansen, fell down during competition, only hours after learning his sister Mrs. Jane Marie Beres, died of leukemia. Jansen suffered disappointment after disappointment in the Olympics, earning him a reputation as “the heartbreak kid,” before he finally captured an Olympic gold medal in 1994.
Vey sad news.
Prayers for Dan Jansen and the family of his sister Mrs. Jane Marie Beres,
Gold Medal Moments: Dan Jansen -- Heartbreak and Triumph.
Dan Jansen's Olympic journey spanned four Games...most memorably in 1988 when his sister died the morning of his 500m race...from there through Albertville and his first race in Lillehammer...there was one disappointment after another...until finally gold in the final race of his Olympic Career.
