Good morning COL Mikel J. Burroughs from a chilly but sunny Northern Virginia
One thing I learned in the miltiary was to bring a proposed solution to the table anytime I had a problem. That didn't mean it was the best or the only solution, just that I was willing to do more than just complain about a situation. Sometimes it was my solution that was adopted, sometimes I got put in a group to come up with some alternatives and occasionally, we just let it go but I learned to think in terms of solutions not problems/obstacles.

In the corporate world, author Tom Peters (“In Search of Excellence”) refers to this as taking ownership & looking upon ourselves as independent business owners rather than looking up to someone else to make decisions for us. It’s a whole new paradigm that galvanizes some of us towards a proactive mindset. Most managers & CEOs love to see that in their staff. And there are others in management who find it threatening and actively try to deter the entrepreneurial attitude. To which I will quote Tom Peters: “if you’re not pushing hard enough to get fired, you’re not pushing hard enough.”

I am prone to overthinking a problem and soon it becomes a monster on the run. At this point, I tend to stop, try to take a deep breath and then move forward, leave the problem alone for a while and then at a later time, try to come up with a better solution. Doesn't always work out how i'd like, but I guess that's life.
