Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1300." Located ~60 million light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Eridanus, this galaxy is about 110,000 light-years across (about the same size of the Milky Way). It was discovered by John Herschel in 1835. In the galactic core, we see what astronomers call a "grand-design" spiral structure that is about 3,300 light-years long. "Grand-design" means a spiral within a spiral. Models suggest that gas in a bar can be funneled inwards into its center, where it can potentially fuel a central supermassive black hole (SMBH). How massive? Data indicates 7.3 million times the size of our Sun. In other words, pretty big.

This Hubble Space Telescope composite view of the gorgeous island universe is one of the largest Hubble images ever made of a complete galaxy. NGC 1300 spans over 100,000 light-years and the Hubble image reveals striking details of the galaxy's dominant central bar and majestic spiral arms. In fact, on close inspection the nucleus of this classic barred spiral itself shows a remarkable region of spiral structure about 3,000 light-years across. Like other spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way, NGC 1300 is thought to have a supermassive central black hole."
