APOD: 2020 August 22 - Yogi And Friends in 3D

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Yogi and Friends in 3D." I admit that I don't currently own a pair of 3D glasses. But I do remember Pathfinder and the Sojourner rover quite well from July 1997 (the external network bandwidth available at NASA HQ was only 3Mb at the time). Barnacle Bill is the rock just left of the rover, and was the first item on Mars analyzed by the Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer onboard Sojouner. Yogi is the big boulder to the right, and the Couch is on the horizon in the middle. We can certainly expect more from Perseverance when it arrives on Mars in 2021.

Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) fro Saturday, August 22, 2020 entitled "Yogi and Friends in 3D."
The title led me to believe that Boo-Boo would be there along with Yogi and either Cindi Bear or Ranger Smith :-)
The image reminded of Lego. I expect this image would be a hit among conspiracy theorists focused on space launches actually being tricks' :-)

Explanation: From July of 1997, a ramp from the Pathfinder lander, the Sojourner robot rover, airbags, a couch, Barnacle Bill and Yogi Rock appear together in this 3D stereo view of the surface of Mars. Barnacle Bill is the rock just left of the solar-paneled Sojourner. Yogi is the big friendly-looking boulder at top right. The "couch" is the angular rock shape visible near center on the horizon. Look at the image with red/blue glasses (or just hold a piece of clear red plastic over your left eye and blue or green over your right) to get the dramatic 3D perspective. The stereo view was recorded by the remarkable Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) camera. The IMP had two optical paths for stereo imaging and ranging and was equipped with an array of color filters for spectral analysis. Operating as the first astronomical observatory on Mars, the IMP also recorded images of the Sun and Deimos, the smallest of Mars' two tiny moons. This July saw the launch of NASA's Mars Perseverance Rover on a mission to the Red Planet."
