In the second such antiwar incident within a week, Roger Allen LaPorte, a 22-year-old member of the Catholic Worker movement, immolates himself in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Before dying the next day, LaPorte declared, “I’m against wars, all wars. I did this as a religious act.” LaPorte’s act of protest followed that of Norman Morrison, a 32-year-old Quaker from Baltimore, who immolated himself in front of the Pentagon on November 2.

Norman Morrison and Roger Allen LaPorte learned the very hard way that suicide by self-immolation is one of the more painful ways to die which is why burning-at-the-stake was so effective in sending a strong message in the middle ages.
Foolish is as foolish does sounds like something Forrest Gump might say but it rings true.

I have always detested burning myself, each time by accident, but at least those wounds have long ago healed. Immolation is a permanent happenstance.

SSgt Robert Marx - I too have been burned a few times. the most lasting was picking up an M-60 machine gun by the barrel after firing extensively in the winter. I stuck my hands in the snow but it didn't help much. It did slightly modify my fingerprints though :-)
