Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Globular Star Cluster 47 Tuc." A globular cluster is a spherical collection of stars that orbits a galactic core. Globular clusters are very tightly bound by gravity, which gives them their spherical shapes, and relatively high stellar densities toward their centers. There are ~200 currently known globular clusters in the Milky Way.
Cluster 47 Tuc (also known as NGC 104) is a Southern Sky feature, and lies 13,000 light years away in the constellation Toucan (just left of the Small Magellanic Cloud). The cluster is made up of hundreds of thousands of stars packed in a volume only about 120 light-years across. Red giant stars on the outskirts of the cluster are the yellowish stars in this portrait. Cluster 47 Tuc is also home to a star with the closest known orbit around a black hole.
