At this late date I would think let it go. More than likely he has punished himself enough.

I wouldn't call it pyrrhic as much as it is hollow. I'm all for these a$$holes being held accountable for their actions but I'm also about justice so the question is begged, will justice be achieved?
Were it practical, I would opt for leaving these trials up to a vote by survivors of concentration camps (not their progeny, just the ones with the tattoos). I wonder if their desire for justice is still as fervent. "From where do we know that it is cruel to not forgive? (Talmud, Bava Kamma 8:7).
Unfortunately, I don't have any quotes on forgiveness representative of the millions of gypsies, homosexuals, Slavs, mentally ill or other such untermensch murdered or tortured at the hands of Nazis. I would be remiss if I didn't bring up the Lockerbie terrorist from Libya who was released for compassionate reasons as he reportedly had 3 months to live. Then the son of a bitch lived another 3 years. I would rather he had rotted in prison.

Thanks for making us aware LTC Greg Henning that Auschwitz medic Hubert Zafke goes on trial for the fourth time as he has been accused of assisting in the killing of 3,681 people at the Auschwitz death camp.
[Edit] Mass murder has no statute of limitations. Trying him makes complete sense. If he is found guilty then punishment is another matter.
Hopefully the fourth trial will be successful.

Don't you think this is quite unnecessary Sir? The man has lived his life and is in his 90's. However misguided this may sound I believe we are at a point where we can let this go.

1. I lost a few relatives in WWII. My family is British, My grandfather and his brother were British Army Lance corporals who fought in the trench warfare of WWI. His brother and wife were killed when German bomb hit their house.
2. My mother's family cared for a Slavic man who was incarcerated at Treblinka where he was routinely beaten. I met him in the 1960's before he died from his injuries.
3. Right now ISIS is doing their best to institute the Grand Caliphate and slaughter those who stand or sit in their way. The Muslim leaders of the 1930's tended to support Hitler;s final solution - the exited Grand Mufti of Jerusalem posed fro pictures with Hitler and complemented him on his efforts to exterminate the Jews.
FYI LTC Greg Henning

I do agree with you on the trying and sentencing. I suppose I was thinking more about the actual punishment itself. It just seems to me that too much effort has been put into this, too many resources utilized. This is the 4th attempt at a sentence, with from what I understand, limited evidence. Sure he was stationed at said location but there is no solid proof he had an actual hand in the atrocities.
