Maj Marty Hogan, the famous John Heisman coached at my alma mater, Auburn University from 1895 to 1899! His overall record at Auburn was 12-4-2, for an overall winning percentage of 72.2%, which is a most enviable record!
At the time Auburn was known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, and the team played as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
As I understand it, he gave Auburn their colors of burnt orange and navy blue and the mascot name Tigers, although I haven't confirmed either of those statements.

Nile Clarke Kinnick Jr. (July 9, 1918 – June 2, 1943) was a student and a college football player at the University of Iowa. He won the 1939 Heisman Trophy and was a consensus All-American. He died during a training flight while serving as a United States Navy aviator in World War II.
