POTUS Richard M. Nixon and his point man VPOTUS Spiro Agnew wanted to win the war in Vietnam with overwhelming force [parallel to the way we won WWII] but Congress and an insufficient percentage of the USA voters concurred with them SP5 Mark Kuzinski.
One of the biggest ironies is that JFK's and LBJ's war morphed into Nixon's war.
Remember how POTUS Obama blamed his predecessor POTUS George W. Bush for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The liberal press aligned themselves with him and frequently referred to Bush's wars. In the eyes of much of the press liberals can do no evil which is why wars tend to be blamed on conservative leaders not the liberals ones that start them or end up backpedaling as the wars continue.

“If we have a united front, the enemy will begin to talk [at the negotiating table in Paris].”

And therein lies the rub. The American left had rather fight the U.S. than the enemy.
