Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on February 11, 1918 commander of Russian forces during World War I Russian General Alexei Maximovitch Kaledin who was a staunch opponent of the Bolsheviks, committed suicide on this day in 1918.
He no doubt could read the writing on the wall after the November 17, 1917 revolution

Background - suicide or murder?
"In Novocherkassk, the Cossack capital, was born the White army who opposed the Soviet regime. Why in Novocherkassk? A request to “give refuge to the Russian officers”, who did not want to submit to the authority of the Bolsheviks, responded ataman Aleksei Maksimovich Kaledin.

Kaledin youth chose the path of war, he graduated from the Nicholas General staff Academy. Colleagues thought he was honest, brave, stubborn, and maybe a few sullen. How happy he was in the military career, so unhappy in your personal life. His only son in twelve years, was drowned while bathing in the river.

The first world war, the future chieftain began as the commander of the 12th cavalry division. He was wounded and awarded. Commanding the 8th army, participated in the famous Lutsk breakthrough, which during the Soviet era became known as the Brusilov (as General Brusilov took the side of Soviet power).

Kaledin wrote to his wife: “You know how I always get angry when you (before the war) began to dream about my career, rise, etc. Is, honey, it’s not enough that fate has sent to us? You should not tempt her to say anything else… My name that made national noise soon completely forgotten. I’m not going to claim that if only God gave me to successfully complete my task (even a little) to the end and only would have been the General success of our armies. Therefore, dear, to dream only about this, please do not vozmezdie that your husband is kind of a special bird, and you, his wife, important lady.”

Kaledin quietly moved his abdication and the February revolution, but survived the collapse of the armed forces. Surrendered his army to General Laura G. Kornilov and returned to the don.

GREAT RANGE OF MILITARY

Event the don has developed not in favor of Soviet power. In 1917, the don Cossacks tried to isolate themselves from the rest of Russia. After nearly two centuries of recess 26 may in Novocherkassk gathered a Large range of military — one delegate was elected from the five thousand people or five hundred Cossacks at the front.

The kings conscription Cossacks offset by certain privileges, primarily the Cossacks generously endowed with fertile land, which caused the envy of your neighbors-farmers and immigrants. Land here and fought because it was claimed and local smallholder farmers — nearly a million people, and most importantly, migrant peasants who have moved to the don from other regions of the country. The Cossacks called them out of town and denied them the right to permanent residence and land, migrants could be either tenants or laborers.

Great range of military rejected the claims of neighbors, peasants, redistribution of land: “the land belongs to the Cossacks!” Other cities there were from eight hundred thousand to one million. They hated the Cossacks, and took an active part in the campaign decossackization. In Novocherkassk Kaledin was persuaded to run for military leader. Cossacks met the famous General applause, and willingly voted for him.

STALIN AGAINST THE COSSACKS

On December 27 at Smolny the people’s Commissar for nationalities Joseph Stalin first declared political distrust of the Bolsheviks by the Cossacks. He was instructed to receive the delegation, the don, who did not want to conflict with Moscow and asked directly what exactly the Soviet government blamed the ataman Kaledin?

— Organizes Kaledin counter-revolutionary forces, explained the Stalin — misses loads of bread and coal, contributes to disorder in the economic life of the country, that is, inflicts the most painful blow of the revolution.
The Cossacks drew the attention of the Soviet people’s Commissar that Kaledin was elected “not by the bourgeoisie and parasites, and labour Cossacks”, which, it turns out, the Soviet government declares war.

— We try to explain to the working Cossacks, where does it Kaledin, — calmly replied Stalin. — But the story knows that sometimes convince-convince friends, but they don’t understand. We have to beat Kaledin and rebound and the working Cossacks.
The Cossacks promised that they will impose order on the don, and requested not to send from Moscow the death squads.

— You, gentlemen, do not represent any force, this was rejected by Stalin — hence, there is no guarantee that your promise to eliminate the counterrevolutionary nest in the don will be executed. And therefore to withdraw the troops sent against the don and to end a fight that we can’t.
Ataman Kaledin agreed to accept Russian officers, and the don from across the country rushed the officers, cadets, cadets. The recent Supreme commander of the Russian army General of infantry Mikhail Alekseyev first arrived in Novocherkassk. He promised to form a Volunteer army that will restore in Russia the law of power.

A General Alexeyev had no funds. People who recently ordered one billion military budget of a great power, was busy, running all over town to find a dozen beds, several pounds of sugar, to warm, to feed and shelter the homeless officers.

In Novocherkassk in November, was formed the first part of the Volunteer army — a summary of the officers ‘ Rota. In December formed a few officer’s mouth, which was subsequently deployed in battalions."
