Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that by July 23, 1964 U.S. Ambassador Maxwell Taylor had twice met with South Vietnamese Premier General Nguyen Khanh to register U.S. disapproval of the recent calls by Khanh and Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky to extend the war into North Vietnam.
It would have been better for all if we had remembered the lessons of WWII and ever our own Civil War, that engaging in total war is the only way to win and in actually since the war is fought to an end with unconditional surrender which results in lower turmoil and most likely less bloodshed that allowing wars to fester as happened in Vietnam and is happening in Korea even now.
If North Vietnam had understood that the South Vietnamese with our advisors and air capability would have intended to bring the war to the north instead of succumbing to have it fought in the south, things would most likely have turned out much differently.
Of course Ho Chi Mihn being the dedicated communists he was, following through with strikes deep into the nerve centers of North Vietnam would have been required,

The South Vietnamese were smarter than Taylor if he resisted taking the war to the north. Wars can never be won by defending one's 50 yard line and never attacking into the enemy's territory.
