President Nguyen Van Thieu displayed wisdom and courage to speak the truth when he said "his government entertains no “ambition or pretense” to take over all fighting by the end of 1970, but given proper support South Vietnamese troops could replace the “bulk” of U.S. troops that year."
Candor is important and Thieu recognized the survival of his nation was at stake SP5 Mark Kuzinski.
To succeed Vietnamization should have been based on success of the ARVN at standing on their own and supporting themselves independent of us instead of a fixed timeline set a world away in Washington, D.C.

And in the end the Democrats in congress cut off the funds for the South Vietnamese military - forcing them into eventual defeat. The Democrats wasted all of our blood and sacrifice in their grasp for domestic political power. They have not changed in the decades since that time.
