Some clarity; BALANCE PISTON isn't an "annual exercise", it's Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET). Such exercises are only conducted at the request of the host nation, in this case the RP. It's foreseeable the Filipino military could stop requesting such events.

Thanks for the update SP5 Mark Kuzinski. In the current climate in the Philippines I am not surprised that President Rodrigo Duterte wants live-fire assault drills to be discontinued [for the time being].
While Barrack Obama is still in office, Duterte is wise to keep his cards close to his chest. A couple months ago he was reaching out to Russia and China. A week ago his administration announced that a small arms requirement would be purchased from the USA.
I am glad that the Balance Piston exercises will continue in part because OEF is still being waged in the southern Philippines.
