Here is an upbeat Charlie Daniels song which seems a lot different than the Charlie Daniels of my youth. The taps ending hit me unexpectedly.

I remember this song when it came out in the early 80s, IIRC.
Very accurate as to what happened to vets of that war.

SFC William Farrell - I was actually more focused on the lack of recognition of PTSD and the trauma involved in any combat vets, life; but I'm also very aware of the mistreatment of the vets by the public. I entered service in 79, so it was still present, but in a lesser degree.

I heard it in the middle 70’s during my Freshman Year in College.
Knew in 1970 Vietnam Soldiers were NOT getting anything except dead!
That had been ‘going on’ since 1965! IMHO

SPC Nancy Greene - it's impossible for you to have heard it in the 1970s, the song wasn't released by Daniels until 1982.

This is a song I had not heard of before your post LTC Stephen F.; a very good song. Taps plays here on base sharply at 2200 each evening!

Awesome Song!
Taps played Every Evening at Sunset at MCB Camp LeJeune when the Flag was lowered. If you were on Base, you Stopped & ‘Recognized’ the Flag was being lowered! In Uniform, You Saluted! If in Civvies, you put your hand over your heart! Everyone STOPPED their cars and ‘rendered’ proper recognition &Respect!
