I did play a park league but not actual Liitle league with teams in other towns, villages .. Rules were not as stupid and p.c. as today’s rules are. If you were MVP
You got rewarded. 3 players got picked and one got and he was picked by fellow
Players.. girls had a team ... we had 5 girl teams and 6 boy teams.. we played enough games I know that.. our team had a party and invited kids from other teams we made 3 batches of homage ice cream and had parents bring toppings. Two mixers were electric white mountain and a husky handcrank. We had enough strong arms to do that handcrank.. We had a blast.. it turned into everybody’s party.. other teams brought their trophy’s
We didn’t have participation trophies.. certificates... with position played if somebody played different ones.. they were all listed.. that didn’t necessarily make them mvp. In fact our mvp was kind of a klutz.. he brought himself, he cheered his fellow players and others too!
(He was challenged, so we let that slide ).
He looked out for others when they were down ‘cause they didn’t get a hit .. He was that player that made us a legit team..
His dad worked for Hormel foods.. they bought our jerseys and ball trousers(ours were like sweat pants and we had team shorts .. when the recreation board found out.. they said we spent too much on them .. (they didn’t know about the new bats this kid’s dad bought so we could have good bats ... along with good catcher’s gear and slider pads .. One of the parents worked at a laundromat/cleaners.. The owner gave her a discount on the laundry bill(half price of what ever the bill was.. that’s why our kids had team Ts and matching gym shorts .. As soon as game was over the hats (had plenty of # 6 cans to put hats over to dry (we didn’t have them frames). shirts and pants and sock leggings came off and to the laundromat they went. We drew some complaints. It was a donation by a parent. Something about amateur Status.. each player responsible for own uniform, equipment. Maintenance thereof.. A parent on another team whined about our picnics-after the game
We usually waited until the whole other team was gone.. or we packed up and went to another park. S’times we went to Lower Huron Park quite a was away where we thought the others would not go. We did a couple camp’g trips to those metro parks.. had to tell kids to keep on down-low.. we had other parents there also.. no probs/questions about inappropriate behavior.. it was on up-n-up
It was about expense of what we did.. I suggested why don’t we get our own sticker for our car .. so whether we go on our own and meet or do a convoy(that was a fave song. Came out kinda late .. we enjoyed it a couple years.. I did that Military academy and went home in-summer a couple months.. 6th grade was
Last year of that park league.. some kids didn’t show up that year and I was one. 13 .. had one more year of that Military
School.. That park board was trying to bust up my dad’s team. So kids couldn’t be on same team every year.. It had parents purchasing new outfits to wear..
every year.. then the p.c. Stuff creeped in...more n more.. Dad and other dad’s of the kids on his team worked to avoid those p.c. Rules .. a trophy for everyone
The challenged boy was mvp 3 years in a row.. he brought dad 2 new challenged kids.. Dad incorporated them to be regular players .. Kids; it’s not winning or losing, it’s how you play that counts and have fun doing it. It’s not supposed to be a job ! For dad it was a job in one way and a stress breaker .. I was in 8th one year and I and a couple other dad’s weren’t happy how practice went. Yeah we’re there to have fun and we needed a break.
So we put the gear away and lined everybody up and gave them the paper grocery sacks.. had them spread out and walk the whole length of the park .. got a lot of papers .. when that mower shreds it makes the park look trashy.. We got chewed out by the contracter. They had hired a contractor to bring a tractor with a big vacuum device with a duckcloth bubble On top to suck up the trash.. Well since we cleaned the park .. The park paid us the $300 minus the $100 for the driver.. So the other teams got in on it
Well one of the parents whined about it was child labor ! A kid’s dad (a kid that wasn’t on dad’s team) went to the board and called her a pompous ditz .<~ maybe not that nice.. might of started with a ‘b’..
told her it builds character.. sgmhe told him obviously s’thing he didn’t have calling her a vulgar name.. s’pose she was correct on that point. .. He didn’t take any kids in with him, so he should get credit for that.. I wondered if she got a kickback from that? No.. they couldn’t find any connection a third party paid them for plausible deniability ? Medium town .. s’pose anything could happen !
