The times they are a changing by Bob Dylan came to mind while reading your discussion SP5 Mark Kuzinski. In hindsight it seems that Gen. William Westmoreland was either deceived or deceiving or both when he told U.S. news reporters: “I am absolutely certain that whereas in 1967 the enemy was winning, today he is certainly losing.”
However at that time in 1967 I expect that Gen. William Westmoreland, who was the commander of U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam, believed what he was saying was true.
The TET offensive was a do-or-die effort by the VC to primarily swing the opinion of the USA people against the war and secondarily inflict as much shock and awe on the US military and South Vietnamese government.

The VC and the North Vietnamese Army were overwhelmed and defeated in every engagement with the US Army. Whereas they had defeated the French army in the field, there was no battle field defeats for the US. The Tet Offensive attempted with great success to influence American public opinion but their respective battle groups were decimated in the field. The Vietnam War during the American stage is a case study in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

SSgt Robert Marx - Actually the VC and NVA achieved tactical success at times usually against small operational bases as in the central highlands. They also achieved tactical successes early on using tunnel networks to minimize losses during arc light bombing, etc. until we had dedicated and wise tunnel rats to root out the varmints in the tunnels.

Gen. Westmoreland was right, Cronkite was wrong, but Cronkite had the louder voice with the public, which had turned disorderly by then.

Yes, this event cast serious doubts when similar claims were made in the Iraq war. We're seeing the last gasp of the insurgency ... yeah right.
