I grew up in New England where religious Blue Laws existed until the 1960s & 70s. Some still may be on the books for all I know. I remember on our 1st Anniversary we were in Oklahoma traveling to our first operational assignment. It was Sunday and we couldn't order wine or champagne with our dinner, fortunately we were coming from California and had some cases of wine in the trunk!

That's some serious (ecclesiastic) politics right there. It is, however, not an indictment on Religion, per se, but rather of the flawed nature of mankind and unfettered ambition.
