Thank you TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on April 24, 1800 that President John Adams approved legislation to appropriate $5,000 to purchase “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress,” thus establishing the Library of Congress.
The initial library acquired books and maps - ironically from England primarily since during the War of 1812 the British burned the Library of Congress in 1814.
On August 19, 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops under the command of Major General Robert Ross and Rear Admiral George Cockburn landed at Benedict, Maryland, on the shores of the Patuxent River. The British forces burned some 3,000 books.
By 1815 when the War of 1812 ended, former President Thomas Jefferson had acquired the largest personal collection of books in the United States. He offered to sell his library to Congress as a replacement for the collection destroyed by the British during the War of 1812.
