Thank you my friend TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on May 19, 1864 President Abraham Lincoln wrote to anti-slavery Congressional leader Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts a proposal that widows and children of soldiers should be given equal treatment regardless of race.

Unfortunately the historical videos about Senator Charles Sumner are focused on his caning by Representative Preston Brooks which occurred on May 22, 1856.
