Son of Sam speaks out: Notorious NYC serial killer reveals 'There was a battle going on inside of me' as he marks the 40th anniversary of his arrest and admits he HATES his notorious label

On the fortieth anniversary of his arrest, the 'Son of Sam' is returning to reveal what lead him to commit the serial killing that held New York City in captive terror for a year, as well as the emotional turmoil he's now experiencing.
In a new interview, convicted serial killer David Berkowitz, 64, said that he now rejects the 'Son of Sam' nickname he made headlines under during his murder and shooting spree that left six people dead and seven wounded between 1976 and 1977.
'As far as I’m concerned, that was not me,' Berkowitz said during the interview with CBS News. 'That was not me. Even the name, I hate that name, I despise the name.'
The nickname was lifted from a taunting letter Berkowitz wrote to authorities and left at a crime scene, in which he identified himself as the 'Son of Sam,' whose father, 'Sam,' ordered him to kill.
Berkowitz, now a born-again Christian, said that the 'Son of Sam,' was actually 'a demon.'
Berkowitz's murderous rampage through New York occurred at a particularly fraught time for city dwellers, who were already facing a period of financial crisis, brutally hot weather and a city-wide blackout that resulted in massive looting.
Under the 'Son of Sam' and '.44 Caliber Killer' monikers, Berkowitz grabbed daily local and national headlines alike for the shocking, seemingly random and unstoppable shootings — particularly of couples in parked cars and women with shoulder-length brown hair — which appeared to be tied to demonic cult activities.
The act of leaving taunting notes for police at crime scenes and sending letters directly to local media only added fuel to the sensational fire.
Berkowitz was eventually caught during one of the biggest manhunts in New York City history.
Years after the fact, his notorious actions continue to interest the public, spawning movies, including Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam' and the TV's 'Out of the Darkness,' starring Martin Sheen.

Berkowitz has had a long time to reflect over the 40 years since his August 10, 1977 arrest, subsequent trial and sentencing to six consecutive life sentences — one for each of the people he killed.
In the new CBS News interview, Berkowitz, who was 24 when arrested, said that he felt 'isolated' during the time leading up to his arrest, claiming that he had been unaware of the feeling at the time and that he was 'just very lost and confused. There was a battle going on inside me.'
He also admitted to feeling remorse for his actions. He called the shootings, 'a break from reality, thought I was doing something to appease the devil. I’m sorry for it.'
When asked what he would tell his younger self before the murders started, Berkowitz said, 'Ugh, turn around before it’s too late because destruction is coming.'
Berkowitz acknowledged the fact that 'people will never understand where I come from, no matter how much I try to explain it.' He added that, 'They wouldn’t understand what it was like to walk in darkness.'
