Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on April 2, 1917 President Woodrow Wilson appeared before Congress to ask for a declaration of war against Germany.
Wilson had sought neutrality but was forced to act after
1. the resumption of the German navy’s policy of unrestricted submarine warfare on February 1 and the sinking of the American cargo ship Housatonic two days later.
2. The final straw was reached on April 1, 1917, when the armed U.S. steamer Aztec was torpedoed by a German submarine near Brest and 28 of its crew members drowned.
President Woodrow Wilson had not acted after the sinking of the ocean liner Lusitania in May 1915, which killed 1,201 people, including 128 Americans.
