Good morning my RP Family. I took a look to the Bible for something on mentoring and found that the word mentor is not mentioned but much instruction is given to mentoring. Please take a look at the below article from Got Questions. Be blessed and have a glorious week.

Taken from gotquestions.org

Should a Christian be involved in mentoring?

Christian mentoring, Bible mentorshipaudio Question: "Should a Christian be involved in mentoring? What does the Bible say about mentorship?"

Answer: The word “mentor” is defined as “a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.” Although “mentoring” doesn’t appear in the Bible, Scripture does give us numerous examples of mentoring. Moses was mentored by his father-in-law Jethro, first as son-in-law and then as a leader (Exodus 18). The mentoring relationship between Eli and Samuel prepared Samuel for the tasks and responsibilities that were his after Eli’s death (1 Samuel 1–4). Jesus mentored His disciples (Luke 9), and both Barnabas and Paul excelled in mentoring (Acts 9–15).

Jesus made His style of mentoring clear: He led so that we can follow. He said, “If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). Because He is our leader and we are to follow Him, Christian mentoring is a process dependent upon submission to Christ. Neither the mentor nor the candidate controls the relationship. As such, the process is best characterized by mutual sharing, trust, and enrichment as the life and work of both participants is changed. The mentor serves as a model and a trusted listener. The mentor relies on the Holy Spirit to provide insight, change lives, and teach through the modeling process.

The Apostle Paul spelled out mentoring as his leadership model very simply. “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice” (Philippians 4:9a). In essence, he is saying, “Let me mentor you. Let me be your role model.” He reminds the new Christians at Thessalonica to “follow our example” (2 Thessalonians 3:7). Example. Teach. Model. These are all facets of mentoring which are indispensable in developing fully devoted followers of Jesus and in transmitting the faith from one generation to the next. It goes without saying that if mentors expect others to follow their example, they must be wholeheartedly committed to following Christ. Any hint of hypocrisy—“do what I say, not what I do”—will be detrimental to both the mentor and his charge.

Not only Jesus and the apostles, but elders in the local church also do their work by mentoring. Peter commands, “Be examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:3), and Paul explains to the elders at Ephesus, “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you” (Acts 20:17). In other words, Paul is telling the elders, “I showed you, now you show them.” In all truth, if a Christian leader is not mentoring someone, to that degree he or she is not living up to his or her calling.

Of course, God has filled the body of Christ with many potential mentors besides those who are named as elders or shepherds. The official church leaders cannot personally meet all the mentoring needs of everyone. While it may not be possible for shepherds to personally, intentionally, hands-on mentor each sheep that needs mentoring, they are to help these needy sheep find godly mentors. To provide for the mentoring needs of their local community of faith, the leaders must be intentional, continually expanding the circle of mentors by “equipping others” to mentor.

I pray that you and I are spiritually mature and that we are increasingly outwardly focused on helping others, my friend and brother-in-Christ PO1 H Gene Lawrence and sister-in-Christ Linda Lawrence.
LORD I pray that YOU mentoring and guiding the mind of each leader, legislator and judge in communities where violence is spiking or escalating. Give them eyes to see and ears to hear and wisdom to generate solutions to bring people together and not drive them away.
I lift up the communities of El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio to YOU. I pray that YOU are restraining vengeance and strengthening compassion in those communities. I pray that many wise counselors who are great listeners are available to those who have lost loved ones and that tears are flowing freely and anger is dissipating.
LORD YOU created each of us in YOUR image in our soul. YOU are self-sufficient and we are utterly dependent on YOU. YOU created us to be blessed and fulfilled when we help others in ways meaningful to them. We recognize that at times more easily than others.
I pray that YOU transform the mind of each of YOUR own to enable us to clearly discern areas of need and specific people that we can help.
The fields are ripe for harvest. LORD YOU ordain the ways and means of salvation. One plants seeds, another person waters them through teaching and encouragement and YOU are responsible for the harvest.
By the power and authority of the Name above all names, Jesus the Christ.

The word mentor is not mentioned, but the word disciple most definitely is, and to disciple someone was most definitely to mentor them. Interestingly, we were not told to go out and make converts, or get people 'saved" we are told to preach the good news (gospel) of the Kingdom of God, and to make disciples of all peoples (mentor them). As I typed those last few words, I heard Paul's words to the Corinthians "I want you to pattern your lives after me, just as I pattern mine after Christ." or as some other versions render it, "Follow me as I follow Christ"

PO1 Kevin Dougherty - excellent response. I do not try to convert. I share the Gospel message and let the Holy Spirit do the work of any conversion, if there is to be any.

Good Monday morning COL Mikel J. Burroughs from the Greater Boston Area... I am currently on my Droid, so don't have access to the tools I have on my laptop. That said, I will complete my response shortly... Have a great Eagle pinning ceremony for your friend! Look for my update later in the day, my friend...

...and I am back after a refreshing morning shower and shave... (Not that you needed to know that... LOL!)

I have had several Mentor's in my younger years, post USAF, and I will tell you that I learned so much from them... They provided the incentive, the drive, the praise, and their admonishment when needed..., but all the time, they were in my court pushing me to learn more, to do more until the time came for me to sprout my wings, so-to-speak, and fly on my own... I have also had the pleasure of mentoring a number of people in my lifetime and I am still doing that today... In my late 20's and my 30's, I coached Youth Hockey, as three of my boys were Hockey enthusiasts and were very good at it, (two goalies and a defenseman)... I coached and led by example and in my first year as a coach I coached a team of boys that were the leftovers with few skills, but some innate ability...

Saturday at 6am was my given Ice time allocation & the then high school goalie and future Olympic goalie and champion, Jimmie Craig came to my practices and worked with my two novice goalies and helped me with my inexperienced team...Eventually my team did pretty well. I went on to coach higher levels through the ages of 15-16 and as my coaching skills became honed, so did the boys on my teams!

Years later, I met some of these boys and as I met each one of them there was a handshake, a hug and a thank you for all that I did for them, as it made a difference in their lives... One can not wish for anything finer than that... I learned a valuable lesson from that time in my life and I have mentored ever since... Some for a long time, and others just for a short while, but with each I try to show them a successful path to take on life's journey so they could/can make the successful choices necessary for them...

This is not what I planned to cover in today's Quotes about mentoring, but what better way to explain mentoring than by previous examples...

So it comes down to this, my RP friends and I can say it no better than the following quote by Mikel Burroughs...

"The ultimate achievement for a true leader is to see those leaders he/or she has developed and mentored over their lifetime." — COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs
