Good Red Friday evening, Rallypoint, and welcome to the August 12th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Portrait of the Eagle Nebula." The Eagle Nebula (M16) lies 7,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the galactic center. It was first discovered by Jean-Philippe de Cheseaux in 1745–46 and later documented by Charles Messier. The nebula measures 70 light-years by 50 light-years and contains the Pillars of Creation, three dust clouds that became famous for the image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995.
The Pillars of Creation are just left of center in this image. A bit further to the left is the Star Queen (or Fairy Queen) of the Eagle Nebula. As an interesting sidebar, the celestial Eagle Nebula passes directly over the terrestrial lands of the Machu Picchu (South America), Angkor Wat (Cambodia), the Niger Delta (Nigeria), the Philippines, and the island of Mali. Each of these earth latitudes have the same celestial latitude of the Eagle Nebula. Do you think those earlier civilizations believed these alignments to be mirrors of each other, and accordingly places of great power? Worth pondering.

Thank you my space-exploration advocate friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the August 12, 2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD); Portrait of the Eagle Nubula

Explanation: A star cluster around 2 million years young surrounded by natal clouds of dust and glowing gas, Messier 16 (M16) is also known as The Eagle Nebula. This beautifully detailed image of the region adopts the colorful Hubble palette and includes cosmic sculptures made famous in Hubble Space Telescope close-ups of the starforming complex. Described as elephant trunks or Pillars of Creation, dense, dusty columns rising near the center are light-years in length but are gravitationally contracting to form stars. Energetic radiation from the cluster stars erodes material near the tips, eventually exposing the embedded new stars. Extending from the ridge of bright emission left of center is another dusty starforming column known as the Fairy of Eagle Nebula. M16 lies about 7,000 light-years away, an easy target for binoculars or small telescopes in a nebula rich part of the sky toward the split constellation Serpens Cauda (the tail of the snake). As framed, this telescopic portrait of the Eagle Nebula is about 70 light-years across.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price Thanks for another great share of our universe. 70 x 50 light years is amazing in size.
