Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Messier 61 Close Up." Lying 55 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo, M61 is also known as NGC 4303. M61 is also a member of the Virgo Cluster of Galaxies (worth a search if you want something interesting to read this morning). M61 is considered to be an example of a barred spiral galaxy similar to our own Milky Way. This 'close up' is an estimated 50,000 light years wide, and shows dust lanes, young blue star clusters, and pink star-forming areas.

Good Wednesday Morning Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! I love this closeup of Messier-61/NGC-4303! I have seen several short videos including one where they separate image into an RGB image, meaning the three primary colors, Red, Blue and Green (best for viewable images) then merge them into its composite... Awesome. I also found a great short clip which scans M-61 to provide a close in of the galaxy...
