Excellent APOD this morning, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price... I watched part of a NASA Live Podcast yesterday and one of the elements that was discussed was the 360° Panorama image... It seems that this was all pre planned with a precise "lattice" covering the 142 image area, which makes up the Panorama... The lattice, as I am calling it, was partly from work done with the Rover Curiosity for its Panorama sweep.

Each section of the lattice corresponds to the coordinates for each image as well as the lighting consistency and image fit... The data for doing the imaging by the Camera on board Perseverance was done while Perseverance was nearing MARS entry into the Martian atmosphere... The camera data was then transmitted back to mission control or lab where the "stitching" (blending) of each image into the next was accomplished... Then the mosaic was inserted on a video editing track and set for the Panorama sweep... Since I work with video and do editing, I understand the process and it is pretty neat... That said, there is a great deal of work that had to be done in the process...

Outstanding APOD in my view, Bill...
Kerry

Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Stitched together Picture of the Day (ASTOD) for Friday, February 26, 2021 entitled "Mars Perseverance Sol 3."

Image: Mars Perseverance Sol 3 - Image Credit - NASA, JPL-Caltech, MSSS, ASU

ASTOD Background
"Explanation: Stitched together on planet Earth, 142 separate images make up this 360 degree panorama from the floor of Jezero Crater on Mars. The high-resolution color images were taken by the Perseverance rover's zoomable Mastcam-Z during mission sol 3, also known as February 21, 2021. In the foreground of Mastcam-Z's view is the car-sized rover's deck. Broad light-colored patches in the martian soil just beyond it were scoured by descent stage rocket engines during the rover's dramatic arrival on February 18. The rim of 45 kilometer-wide Jezero Crater rises in the distance. In the coming sols, Perseverance will explore the ancient lake-delta system in the crater, hunting for signs of past microscopic life and collecting samples for potential future return to planet Earth."
