Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Messier 81." Also known as NGC 3031 or Bode's Galaxy, M81 is the first of the four deep space beauties discovered by Johann Elert Bode, who found both M81 and M82 (150,000 light years away from M81) on December 31, 1774. According to his historical notes: “I found through the seven-foot telescope, closely above the head of UMa [constellation Ursa Major], east near the star at its ear, two small nebulous patches separated by about 0.75 degrees, the positions of which relative to the neighbored small stars are shown in the tenth figure. The patch Alpha (M81) appears mostly round and has a dense nucleus in the middle."
By investigating Cepheid variables associated with the galaxy, astronomers have determined M81 to be approximately 11 million light years away. Can you imagine how bright it would be had it been closer?

Yet another wonderful image of the heavens which brings glory to God to those with eyes to see.
I had wondered why so many galaxies have Messier in their name. 'One of the earliest catalogues of objects in the sky was made by Charles Messier. Messier was looking for comets in the 1700's, but kept finding objects that looked fuzzy, like comets, but didn't move.' It is good that Charles Messier developed the catalogue and not Crapper for instance :-)

"Explanation: One of the brightest galaxies in planet Earth's sky is similar in size to our Milky Way Galaxy: big, beautiful Messier 81. Also known as NGC 3031 or Bode's galaxy for its 18th century discoverer, this grand spiral can be found toward the northern constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The sharp, detailed telescopic view reveals M81's bright yellow nucleus, blue spiral arms, pinkish starforming regions, and sweeping cosmic dust lanes. Some dust lanes actually run through the galactic disk (left of center), contrary to other prominent spiral features though. The errant dust lanes may be the lingering result of a close encounter between M81 and the nearby galaxy M82 lurking outside of this frame. M81's faint, dwarf irregular satellite galaxy, Holmberg IX, can be seen just below the large spiral. Scrutiny of variable stars in M81 has yielded a well-determined distance for an external galaxy -- 11.8 million light-years."
