Thank you my friend TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on December 3, 1944 a civil war broke out in Athens, Greece as communist guerrillas battled democratic forces for control of a liberated Greece. Germany had occupied Greece to bail out Italy after Italy’s failed invasion threatened to leave Greece open to Allied occupation.
In December 1981 I took a slow train from Munich to Athens and we passed by the battlefields of the civil war in Greece. Bunkers, barbed wire, and other remnants of the civil war were still clearly visible in northern Greece at that point.
