APOD: 2021 September 1 - Dancing Ghosts: Curved Jets from Active Galaxies

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Dancing Ghosts: Curved Jets from Active Galaxies." Recall that an active galactic nucleus is a compact region at the center of a galaxy that has a much-higher-than-normal luminosity over at least some portion of the electromagnetic spectrum not produced by stars. And relativistic jets can extend from galaxies along the axis of rotation of the suspected black holes at the center of such galaxies. What happens when you combine the two? A trip to the land down under gives us an answer.
The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a radio telescope located in Western Australia north of Perth. ASKAP was able to resolve the shape of the relativistic jets emerging from these two galaxies by analyzing the energy levels of electrons flowing around magnetic fields associated with the jets (the phenomenon is called 'sychrotron radiation'). This dataset was produced from one of the pilot survey projects undertaken by ASKAP in preparation for its full operation in 2022.

Thank to the folks who designed and sustain the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope, the invisible to the naked eye is made somewhat clearer using radio [wave] data overlaid "on an optical view of the sky (Dark Energy Survey)'

Explanation: Why would galaxies emit jets that look like ghosts? And furthermore, why do they appear to be dancing? The curled and fluffy jets from the supermassive black holes at the centers of two host galaxies (top center and lower left) are unlike anything seen before. They were found by astronomers using the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope when creating maps tracing the evolution of galaxies. Images preceding this Evolutionary Map of the Universe survey only showed amorphous blobs. Eventually, comparisons of relative amounts of energy emitted revealed the glowing elongated structures were created by electrons streaming around magnetic field lines. Overlaying the radio data on an optical view of the sky (Dark Energy Survey) confirmed that the electron streams originated from the centers of active galaxies. Usually such Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) produce straight jets. A leading hypothesis for the geometric origin of these unusually graceful shapes involves the flow of large-scale intergalactic winds."
