APOD: 2022 July 3 - Phobos: Doomed Moon of Mars

Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the July 3rd edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Phobos: Doomed Moon of Mars." You may recall the names of the two Martian moons: Phobos (Fear) and Deimos (Panic). Of the two, Phobos orbits Mars at a mere 5,800 km (our Moon is 400,000 km from Earth). When the Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter (MRO) was first placed in orbit about Mars in March 2006, its orbit carried the spacecraft on a highly elliptical path ranging from 426km to 44,500 km above the planet's surface.
As MRO was inserted into its final science orbit of 450km in 2006-2007, it was able to snap this closeup of Phobos as the two passed by each other. Given their obvious proximity, some ground controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) had to be pretty confident in their calculations to pull this off. This is one of several photos of Phobos taken by the MRO that have been published since December 2006.

Explanation: This moon is doomed. Mars, the red planet named for the Roman god of war, has two tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos, whose names are derived from the Greek for Fear and Panic. These martian moons may well be captured asteroids originating in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter or perhaps from even more distant reaches of our Solar System. The larger moon, Phobos, is indeed seen to be a cratered, asteroid-like object in this stunning color image from the robotic Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, with objects as small as 10 meters visible. But Phobos orbits so close to Mars - about 5,800 kilometers above the surface compared to 400,000 kilometers for our Moon - that gravitational tidal forces are dragging it down. In perhaps 50 million years, Phobos is expected to disintegrate into a ring of debris.
