APOD: 2021 January 26 - Central NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Central NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide." NGC 1316 lies some 60 million light years away towards the constellation Fornax (Furnace). Since Fornax is found in the Southern Hemisphere, most of us will have to rely on shots like this one from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Here we see an elliptical galaxy...with dust lanes (like a spiral galaxy). A wider view shows nearby NGC 1317, and what appear to be collision rings of stars surrounding both. The third piece of evidence suggesting a galactic collision is the presence of radio waves. The visually brightest member of the Fornax galaxy cluster (there are 54 total members), NGC 1316 is also the strongest radio source. These radio waves extend over 1 million light years either side of NGC 1316, akin to relativistic jets seen in other APOD photos.

While astrophysicists ponder how an 'unusual jumbles of stars, gas, and dust like NGC 1316' form, in God's infinite wisdom HE created creation to form, break-up and reform from macro level in the heavens to micro level at cell levels in flora and fauna including human beings.

"Explanation: How did this strange-looking galaxy form? Astronomers turn detectives when trying to figure out the cause of unusual jumbles of stars, gas, and dust like NGC 1316. Inspection indicates that NGC 1316 is an enormous elliptical galaxy that somehow includes dark dust lanes usually found in a spiral galaxy. Detailed images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope shows details, however, that help in reconstructing the history of this gigantic tangle. Deep and wide images show huge collisional shells, while deep central images reveal fewer globular clusters of stars toward NGC 1316's interior. Such effects are expected in galaxies that have undergone collisions or merging with other galaxies in the past few billion years. The dark knots and lanes of dust, prominent in the featured image, indicate that one or more of the devoured galaxies were spiral galaxies. NGC 1316 spans about 50,000 light years and lies about 60 million light years away toward the constellation of the Furnace (Fornax).
