APOD: 2021 July 25 - Crescent Neptune and Triton

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Crescent Neptune and Triton." This image is from Voyager 2, and was taken in 1989 as the spacecraft headed out of our Solar System. Neptune never presents a crescent phase to viewers on Earth, so this perspective of both the planet and its moon Triton is certainly a unique one. The blue colors we see from our vantage point are reflected to the left here (back towards the Earth and Sun), giving Neptune a washed-out look. Current data from NASA shows Voyager 2 in interstellar space over 11 billion miles from Earth travelling 34,390.98 miles per hour.

"Explanation: Gliding silently through the outer Solar System, the Voyager 2 spacecraft camera captured Neptune and Triton together in crescent phase. The elegant picture of the ice-giant planet and its cloudy moon was taken from behind just after closest approach in 1989. It could not have been taken from Earth because Neptune never shows a crescent phase to sunward Earth. The unusual vantage point also robs Neptune of its familiar blue hue, as sunlight seen from here is scattered forward, and so is reddened like the setting Sun. Neptune is smaller but more massive than Uranus, has several dark rings, and emits more light than it receives from the Sun."
