Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Video: Flash on Jupiter." Do you remember the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet from back in 1994? It broke apart and hit the planet Jupiter, each piece leaving a dark scar that lasted for several months. It was the first time direct evidence was obtained that Jupiter played a significant role in Solar System "house cleaning", keeping potential debris impacts away from the inner planets. Jupiter is at it again in this 10 second video clip. The planet appears to 'shimmer' due to distortions caused by Earth's atmosphere. The bright flash you see was caused by an object entering the Jovian exosphere. Scientists believe it was an icy piece of rock about the size of a commerical bus.

thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Video Clip of the Day (AVCOD) for Friday, September 17, 2021 entitled "Flash on Jupiter." focused on the observation that from July 16 through July 22, 1994, pieces of an object designated as Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter.

As most of us recognize, the LORD is in control of all creation and he blesses us with what happens in the heavenlies including our own solar system.

"Explanation: There has been a flash on Jupiter. A few days ago, several groups monitoring our Solar System's largest planet noticed a two-second long burst of light. Such flashes have been seen before, with the most famous being a series of impactor strikes in 1994. Then, fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 struck Jupiter leaving dark patches that lasted for months. Since then, at least seven impacts have been recorded on Jupiter -- usually discovered by amateur astronomers. In the featured video, variations in the Earth's atmosphere cause Jupiter's image to shimmer when, suddenly, a bright flash appears just left of center. Io and its shadow are visible on the right. What hit Jupiter will likely never be known, but considering what we do know of the nearby Solar System, it was likely a piece of rock and ice -- perhaps the size of a bus -- that broke off long-ago from a passing comet or asteroid."
