Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Planet Earth at Twilight." Making a repeat appearance (from Earth Day 2020), this photo was captured from the International Space Station (ISS) in 2001. My favorite times of day--morning and evening twilight--both involve the terminator: where the light rays from a source are tangent to the edge of the subject form. And here we see our planet as it passes from day into night. I guess the more formal term is chiaroscuro...contrasts between light and dark that govern an entire composition. We do have a wild but lovely home.

I appreciate your dedication and diligence in posting these daily posts.
This is a wonderful view from the International Space Station. An old friend and classmate Boo Williams has spent many tours of duty on the International Space Station. This is one area where the USA and USSR cooperate. He was launched from bases in Russia to travel to the ISS.

"Explanation: No sudden, sharp boundary marks the passage of day into night in this gorgeous view of ocean and clouds over our fair planet Earth. Instead, the shadow line or terminator is diffuse and shows the gradual transition to darkness we experience as twilight. With the Sun illuminating the scene from the right, the cloud tops reflect gently reddened sunlight filtered through the dusty troposphere, the lowest layer of the planet's nurturing atmosphere. A clear high altitude layer, visible along the dayside's upper edge, scatters blue sunlight and fades into the blackness of space. This picture was taken in June of 2001 from the International Space Station orbiting at an altitude of 211 nautical miles. But you can check out the vital signs of Planet Earth Now."
