Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that Presidential hopeful Senator Robert Kennedy (D-New York) proposed a three-point plan to help end the war. The plan included:
1. suspension of the U.S. bombing of North Vietnam and
2. gradual withdrawal of U.S. and North Vietnamese troops from South Vietnam
3. with replacement by an international force.
Unsurprisingly, Secretary of State Dean Rusk rejected Kennedy’s proposal because he wisely recognized that the North Vietnamese would never actually withdraw their troops.

Bobby Kennedy juggled between supporting LBJ and wading into the strategic discussion on Vietnam to show he had been thinking seriously about the issues. Of course his solution was naïve

"A special news presentation featuring Ronald Reagan and Robert F. Kennedy, who answer questions from international students. The main topic was Vietnam. Commercials were included. Quality varies due to original tape conditions."

IMHO. Feckless, fickle, and foolish politicians and planers of policy and goals. We fought the war with the tools made available to us with all the micromanagement and self-imposed limitations, and we actually did quite well until an apathetic society experiencing moral decay took up the “battle cry” of defeat. One can “ride the waves”, but cannot fight the tide.
