THE GERMAN INVASION OF RUSSIA Military History World War II Documentary
A video about the Nazi invasion of Russia during its 1941 campaign during ww2.
Thank you my friend SGT (Join to see) for posting an interesting perspective as well as some of the photographs taken by Dieter Keller in Ukraine/Belarus 1941/1942.
1. It is easy for many to consider German soldiers to all have been Nazi's in WWII. That is similar to an assumption that all Soviet soldiers were communist party members. Both are over simplifications.
2. Operation Barbarossa broke the August 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact named after Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov and German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop.
a. Germany and USSR agreed to non aggression while they agreed to divide up Poland. USSR executed 22,000 Polish military officers and intelligentsia. "Katyn massacre was a series of mass executions of nearly 22,000 Polish military officers and intelligentsia carried out by the Soviet Union, specifically the NKVD in April and May 1940.
b. I am very familiar with the Einsatzgruppen [Schutzstaffel (SS) military death squads]. The Nazi's were concerned about their executioners mental health because they initially used single shots at close range to kill unarmed Jews/Slavs and anybody else they considered 'undesirable.'
c. Several soviet vassal states looked to Germany as a liberator form the Soviet Union. AS long as the Wehrmacht was advancing through they tended to be treated well [except for Soviet soldiers.] The follow-on echelons included Nazi ideologues who viewed people based on facial structure, etc. They considered Slavs to be subhuman like Jews and Gypsies. Where the Nazi and Einsatzgruppe operated the majority of the atrocities were committed. By God's grace they did not annihilate the Slavs, Jews or Gypsies in their genocidal mania.
As a student of history, I had a keen interest in WWII. My family had lost many relatives during the Battle of Britain. I caused some angst in my family by studying WWII from British, German, and US perspective as well as Russian and Japanese.
I have hundreds of non-fiction books on WWII. I also have a number of color photos taken [perhaps by Dieter Keller. These are images of Wehrmacht soldiers on the Russian steppe. I had purchased these from a military history magazine about 1970. I was focused on images of soldiers and don't remember if there were any focused on the aftermath of destruction.

The Lviv Pogrom (1941) - How Jews Were Massacred by Nazis and Ukrainians
Did you know some Ukrainians helped the Nazis with exterminating the Jews? The Second World War in Ukraine began on the 22nd of June 1941 when the Nazis launched Operation Barbarossa. It was the name for the full scale German invasion of the Soviet Union. Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union. As soon as the nazi invasion of Ukraine began the Soviet secret service (NKVD) massacred tens of thousands of political prisoners that were locked up in the western regions. The regions were annexed by the Soviet Union after the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. When the Germans invaded Ukraine Jews were slaughtered by the SS Einsatzgruppen. The Holocaust by Bullets had begun. The Babi Yar Massacre near Kiev was just one example of the Holocaust in Ukraine. However, the Nazis were assisted by Ukrainian collaborators. Ukrainian collaboration with Nazi Germany and antisemitism in Ukraine was a result of Stalin's terror policy and the widespread belief Jews were communists (Jewish Bolshevism). The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) led by Stepan Bandera. Later the Lwów Ghetto (Lemberg Ghetto) was set up. Over the course of WW II in Ukraine many Jews would be exterminated.

In Ukraine, which had been under Soviet occupation for over a generation, many Ukrainians considered Germany as liberator. Many adopted Nazi ideology against Jews. These emulated the Einsatzgruppen genocidal roles in areas of Ukraine. Thankfully most Ukrainians did not.
Ukrainian Families Helped To Hide Jews During The Babyn Yar Massacre
"In 1941, when the German Army took over the town of Pidhaytsi in the Ternopil Region, Canadian Filmmaker Iryna Korpan says that people in the village were hopeful after experiencing the brutality of the Soviet Regime.
Korpan’s grandmother, Kateryna Sikorska, a widow with three young children lived next door to a Jewish family, Dr. Kresel and her two sons Dolik and Leonid.
At the time, the population of Pidhaytsi was about 6,000-8,000. Approximately 60% of the citizens were Jewish, and everyone lived as neighbors, says Korpan.
Things began to change in Pidhaytsi when newspapers started publishing headlines such as ‘Poland Without Jews’ and the town’s Jewish population was moved to a ghetto.
When things became even more dangerous, Korpan’s family tried to save the lives of the Jewish population. Her grandmother’s actions cost her her life. In her documentary “She Paid The Ultimate Price,” Korpan travels to Ukraine and Israel to meet with survivors. “This tragedy cannot be forgotten; we have to keep the memory alive.”
Hromadske’s Josh Kovensky spoke to Iryna Korpan, Canadian Filmmaker on September 25th, 2016 in Kyiv.'
