APOD: 2021 April 11 - When Black Holes Collide

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "When Black Holes Collide." Some of the most innovative work in astronomy is being accomplished in the field of interferometry: the study of gravitational waves. You may recall that gravity is one of the four fundamental physical forces (the other three being electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force). We can't see gravitational waves themselves, but we can observe their effects. These are the "ripples" in space and time that were predicted by Einstein in 1916.
Notice the "rings" around the the two black holes in this 16-second video clip. When light passes an object of sufficient mass (like a black hole), its path is 'bent' by gravity - making it look like it comes from a different place than expected. This effect is called gravitational lensing. When the source, lense, and observer (e.g. us) are in alignment, the full effect is called an Einstein ring. Through interferometry, we have a useful tool for better understanding the mechanics of the Universe we live in.
