Good morning RP. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "M82: Galaxy with a Supergalactic Wind." Messier 82 (M82), the Cigar Galaxy, is also classified as a 'starburst' galaxy. A starburst galaxy is creating new stars at a rate greater than 300 M☉/yr ( M☉= 1 solar mass, the size of our Sun). The outward expansion of red gas and dust is believed to be caused by the combined particle winds of many stars, creating a galactic superwind. The red color is due to ionized hydrogen. M82 can be seen with a small telescope, and lies 12 million light years distant near the Big Dipper (Ursa Major).
