Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Messier 106." Found some 21 million light years from Earth, Messier 106 (M106) lies in the constellation Canes Venatici (the Hunting Dogs). While it has a place in Messier's catalog, the nebula was first discovered in 1781 by his assistant Pierre Mechain. This composite image of Hubble and amateur data reveals a second set of spiral arms (red hue) spinning around the galactic core. Unlike the other arms, these extra arms are made up of hot hydrogen gas rather than stars.
M106 is a Seyfert galaxy, showing characteristic emission lines across the electromagnetic spectrum (from radio waves to X-rays). The visual luminosity of a Seyfert galaxy is not unusual, but its total luminosity (including radio waves, infrared, and x-ray) is 100 times normal when compared to non-Seyfert galaxies. Seyferts behave much like quasars, and likely produce their observed energy through the gravitational influence of a central supermassive black hole.

The Heavens Declare The Glory of God
An illustration of God's Glory with His creation of Nebula and other awesome wonders in space. Awesome! This is an arrangement by Morten Lauridsen. This is ...
Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for Friday, April 9, 2021 entitled "Messier 106."
Yes another wonderful image contributed by an Amateur [Robert Gendler] which shows an image of the heaven which is apparently over 21 million years old [based on linear speed of light]. To be honest I expect the curved nature posited by Einstein in relativity could alter the estimate of time and distance :-)
The author of creation, the LORD, knows what HE is doing in all areas of creation. Absolute truth is true whether or not anybody recognizes it or believes it :-)

APOD Background
"Explanation: Close to the Great Bear (Ursa Major) and surrounded by the stars of the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici), this celestial wonder was discovered in 1781 by the metric French astronomer Pierre Mechain. Later, it was added to the catalog of his friend and colleague Charles Messier as M106. Modern deep telescopic views reveal it to be an island universe - a spiral galaxy around 30 thousand light-years across located only about 21 million light-years beyond the stars of the Milky Way. Along with a bright central core, this stunning galaxy portrait, a composite of image data from amateur and professional telescopes, highlights youthful blue star clusters and reddish stellar nurseries tracing the galaxy's spiral arms. It also shows off remarkable reddish jets of glowing hydrogen gas. In addition to small companion galaxy NGC 4248 at bottom right, background galaxies can be found scattered throughout the frame. M106, also known as NGC 4258, is a nearby example of the Seyfert class of active galaxies, seen across the spectrum from radio to X-rays. Active galaxies are powered by matter falling into a massive central black hole."

A whole galaxy, with what might be a massive blackhole at its center? Awesome.
