Everybody who has spent time on a military installation has heard bugle calls - either by an actual bugler or a recorded bugle call. Some calls woke us up [First Call]; accompanied the raising of the National Colors [Reveille]; told us it was time to eat [Mess Call]; announced the retiring of the National Colors [Retreat]; told us to turn to out the lights in squad rooms of old [Tattoo]; told us to go back to our rooms [Call to Quarters]; and go to sleep (Taps) or remember the recently departed.
Many bases, posts, camps and stations only used some of these bugle calls each day; but, a few used many or most - especially West Point in my experience. Those of us who spent time on Parade fields heard Assembly, Attention and Adjutant's Call played many times. I can't remember if a bugle call coincided with the Commander's command to initiate pass in review.
The U.S. Army Music hyperlink includes each bugle call.
How did the bugle calls affect you? Did you enjoy them or did you do your best to be inside when they were played?

I love them all. Taps holds a special place in my heart. I also like Adjutant’s Call. There’s nothing like seeing that S1 scurry across the parade field at a range walk.

Taps also holds a special place in my heart. Six of my USMA classmates were killed while I was a USMA cadet and Taps was played by a lone bugle at the far end across the Apron at the parade field at West Point
I have heard taps too many times in honor of fellow soldiers who were killed.

LTC Stephen F., the first time I heard Taps was in the Boy Scouts, when I got to 7 grade I chose to join the band and learn how to play the cornet. This in turn lead to my dad asking me to learn Taps on camp outs. It's really moving to here as it drifts across the area. But the emotional part came when someone asked my dad if I would play it a a memorial service for a member of the VFW who had passed. They were meeting in an old movie theater, I went to the area where there had once been the projectors. As the ceremony ended I was given my signal and played it, from that moment I truly understood what it ment. Today I always seem to get something in my eyes when I hear it.

My favorite (as far as its musicality) is Tattoo. As a young Marine, I became fascinated with bugle/trumpet calls and their history and was able to learn that the different branches within the U.S. Army each had their own musical calls, with each branch having its own instrument (either a bugle or a trumpet). There were not only the daily service calls (first call, reveille, sick call, mess call, mail call, To the Color, Retreat, Tattoo, &c, - calls that regulated a soldier's day), but also drill calls (about all that is left of these calls are Attention and Carry On), calls that told a soldier how to dress (e.g., Overcoats) and when to do it (Dress Parade), as well as calls for meetings (1st Sergeant's call and Adjutant's call), and tactical calls for the battlefield. By the late 19th c., all the calls had been amalgamated into one set of calls for the entire Army. The Navy added calls for its own purposes. And eventually, as military and naval bases became too big and sprawling for buglers to be able to be heard, electronic systems carried the call (while the trade of field musician fell to the wayside). Every company used to have its bugler (and earlier, its drummer) to play calls. That doesn't exist today. I like it when bugle calls are heard on bases - I think it's a great continuation of tradition, and one that should be done more often..

Thank you for responding MSgt Gerald Orvis that Tattoo is your favorite bugle call.
I well remember as a cadet as USMA, West Point learning the significance of the bugle calls and then we learned in multiple parade practices and pass-in-reviews to be guided by the bugle calls almost by rote.

LTC Stephen F. The final notes of Tattoo reminded me of "Death Valley Days" and 20-mule-team Borax!

Taps is my favorite. I always get a bit misty eyed when I hear it (especially at my Dad's funeral).

"Officers' Call" - Means we're about to "turn to!" "Post" is nice too. However, I'm always looking for the ponies when I hear it.

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D.
Capt Gregory Prickett It's always been my favorite, but the place I heard it best and most was during the 27 months I lived in SNCO housing at Schofield Barracks on Oahu just below Kolekole Pass. We had a speaker located outside the back of our two-story Capehart building. . . .

I serve on our V.F.W. Honor Guard...I was cooking s’thing up about the Taps playing.
I have Taps In my phone and have a good portable speaker and a friend who has same kind of phone I do... what I did was send her the laps. She early on synced her phone with that speaker.. she followed in her car and was where she could see us.. We pulled off a echo taps..
it was so Neat !.. The family and friends were so impressed.. a friend or relative dropped by and donated a $200 check for our Honor Guard. We’ve done 4 like that over that past 7 months..

The 184 people who perished from the September 11th attack on the Pentagon were remembered with a memorial dedication Thursday. (Sept. 11)
Thanks for responding, my friend SSgt Boyd Herrst and letting us that you and a friend made an echo version of Taps.
I have been stationed a few places where as taps was played there was an echo. First was at West Point where taps was played by a lone bugler by the flag pole near Trophy Point. From my barracks room I could her the distant bugler but not see him because he was on the far side of The Plain.
Taps by the Pentagon was moving when it was played by the River Entrance which overlooks the Potomac River as well as in the inner court when the sound would echo off the walls of the five sided building [outside E-ring]
I remember the anniversary service at the Pentagon when the flag was unfurled.

Taps when performed by a proficient buglar can be really moving and a natural echo as good as having that 2d buglar not far but far enough doing a couple note delay..
