Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Mimas by Saturnlight." Mimas is one of the satellite moons of Saturn. This image was captured by the Cassini spacecraft on January 30, 2017. Cassini's camera was pointed in a nearly sunward direction only 45,000 kilometers from Mimas. Once you get to today's APOD page itself, mouse over the image to see an enhanced version that shows the rest of the moon lit by sunlight reflected from Saturn itself. The extra link to the Herschel Crater is also worth a look.

Good Saturday morning Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! WOW! Saturn's Moon Mimas looks like it was bombarded by a million pieces of space debris!!! I haven't seen an image of Mimas as large as that and with so much detail... I found a very short (1-minute) clip taken by NASA that shows a 360° rotation... Best watched Full Screen for the Largest presentation.

The light and Dark Side of the Moon - Mimas
"Explanation: Peering from the shadows, the Saturn-facing hemisphere of Mimas lies in near darkness alongside a dramatic sunlit crescent. The mosaic was captured near the Cassini spacecraft's final close approach on January 30, 2017. Cassini's camera was pointed in a nearly sunward direction only 45,000 kilometers from Mimas. The result is one of the highest resolution views of the icy, crater-pocked, 400 kilometer diameter moon. An enhanced version better reveals the Saturn-facing hemisphere of the synchronously rotating moon lit by sunlight reflected from Saturn itself. To see it, slide your cursor over the image (or follow this link). Other Cassini images of Mimas include the small moon's large and ominous Herschel Crater."
