Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Fire in Space." What's mankind's oldest chemistry experiment? Combustion (fire). Light a candle on Earth, and you are rewarded with a teardrop-shaped flame (provided your candle wick isn't too long). But flames don't form teardrops on the International Space Station (ISS, see photo). In microgravity, flames are spheres. On Earth, a flame greedily consumes fuel (e.g. oxygen) and grows. In space, flames let the oxygen come to them.
Scientists also learned of a new phenomenon during experiments on the ISS: cool flames. A visible flame burns at a temperature greater than 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Cool flames burn at only 980 degrees. To top it off, the chemistry a cool flame is different. Visible flames produce soot, carbon dioxide, and water. Cool flames produce carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.
