Yes they did BUT never envisioned what the modern United States would become which is why the checks and balances they established are vital as we watched them being challenged under the Trump administration actions to undermine our democratic institutions. Thank God the constitutional "guard rails" held, although shaky in places since the administration had co-opted the Attorney Generals office and DOJ, key players in the checks and balances. Finally! Two weeks, although Trump can still do a lot more damage but as more Republicans and administration staffers say "no" to this 4 year old, maybe we'll make it with too much more danger to our national security and democratic institutions.
