Mary Walker was awarded her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1855 from Syracuse Medical College in New York, having been the only woman in her class. After working in private practice, the outbreak of the Civil War led her to travel to Washington D.C. where she hoped to join the Union Army as a surgeon.
The army rejected her application due to her being a woman, so she was forced to volunteer as a nurse at the Patent Office Hospital. She moved to the field as an unpaid civilian surgeon in 1862 and was finally employed as a civilian assistant surgeon in the Army of the Cumberland by General George H. Thomas the following year.
While employed by the Union, Walker often crossed enemy lines to treat civilians. On 10 April 1864, she was arrested by Confederate troops as she was returning from one such trip. Accused of being a spy, she was imprisoned in the notoriously brutal Castle Thunder prison. Walker was eventually freed as part of a prisoner exchange on 12 August.
Dr Walker left government service within a year of her release. Nevertheless, she was awarded the newly-introduced Medal of Honor by President Andrew Johnson after it was determined that she could not receive a retroactive commission for her service.
The Medal of Honor is the highest award given to members of the United States military, and is only presented for exceptional acts of valour. At the time, however, there were no regulations regarding how and when it should be awarded. Consequently in 1917 Walker’s was among 911 awards that were ‘deleted’ during an eligibility review. Her medal was restored in 1977, almost sixty years after her death."
