APOD: 2019 October 16 - BHB2007: A Baby Binary Star in Formation

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "BHB2007: A Baby Binary Star in Formation." Located approximately 900 light years away in the Pipe Nebula, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) recently captured one of the highest resolution images yet taken of a binary star system in formation. Most stars in the universe come in the form of pairs—binaries—or even multiple star systems. In this image, we see two compact sources, believed to be two young stars. Both protostars are surrounded by a circumbinary disk with a total mass of about 80 Jupiter masses, which shows a complex network of dust structures distributed in spiral shapes.
