Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Mercury and the Da Vinci Glow." The 'Da Vinci Glow' is light reflected from Earth to the dark side of the Moon, and then back to Earth. Also called 'earthshine', Leonardo da Vinci first explained the phenomenon when he realized that both Earth and the Moon reflect sunlight at the same time.

As the waning Moon rises early in the morning of July 8th from near the Teide Observatory in the Canary Islands, we also capture a glimpse of Mercury (the lower of the two bright points in the photo). From the surface of Mercury, the Sun would appear more than three times as large as it does when viewed from Earth, and the sunlight would be as much as seven times brighter.

The faint image of mercury which is visible by the naked eye is a wonderful illustration of the creation of God and placement of the earth at the outer rings of the Milky Way. This enables us to see vast areas of the heavens, by God's design and grace

This is a beautiful image dominated by the moon and the the silhouette of the "predawn skyscape from Tenerife's Teide National Park in the Canary Islands."

"Explanation: On July 8th early morning risers saw Mercury near an old Moon low on the eastern horizon. On that date bright planet, faint glow of lunar night side, and sunlit crescent were captured in this predawn skyscape from Tenerife's Teide National Park in the Canary Islands. Never far from the Sun in planet Earth's sky, the fleeting inner planet shines near its brightest in the morning twilight scene. Mercury lies just below the zeta star of the constellation Taurus, Zeta Tauri, near the tip of the celestial bull's horn. Of course the Moon's ashen glow is earthshine, earthlight reflected from the Moon's night side. A description of earthshine, in terms of sunlight reflected by Earth's oceans illuminating the Moon's dark surface, was written over 500 years ago by Leonardo da Vinci. Waiting for the coming dawn in the foreground are the Teide Observatory's sentinels of the Sun, also known as (large domes left to right) the THEMIS, VTT, and GREGOR solar telescopes."
