Good Sunday morning everyone. It was a busy end of week. We had an excellent workshop for school counselors and social workers with lots of good questions and ideas on how to run the groups that are so much needed for our kids. And I have also been busy doing follow up calls to RC staff and volunteers for input on how we are handling our disaster responses and to make sure everyone is okay; some of those recent events have been pretty stressful and a number of people went from one event directly to another...
Competence, a quality needed for leadership and for living a successful life. It's so important that you build experience tempered by feedback so that you are not sitting in a bubble believing all is well when it isn't. That's the sort of confidence in your level of competence that does not bode well for long term success. It's important that you adjust, that you build your skills and correct for errors so that your competence is strong, sturdy and believed by both you and those you lead.

Good morning my Brothers and Sisters from the greater Boston Area of this beautiful Blue Marble circling our Sun... I hope you all are having a great day...
The Colonel's message for today is, “Competence Day!”, and it is a great topic for discussion!!!
Here are a few quotes which caught my eye:
"Love what you do. Get good at it. Competence is a rare commodity in this day and age. And let the chips fall where they may." - Jon Stewart
"Competence doesn't seem like a big deal until you are forced to realize that your own government has none." - Bruce Sterling
"Trust is a function of two things: character and competence. Character includes your integrity, your motive and your intent with people. Competence includes your capabilities, your skills, and your track record. Both are vital." - Stephen Covey
"Competence goes beyond words. It's the leader's ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that others know that you know how - and know that they want to follow you." - John C. Maxwell
"Competence means keeping your head in a crisis, sticking with a task even when it seems hopeless, and improvising good solutions to tough problems when every second counts. It encompasses ingenuity, determination and being prepared for anything." - Chris Hadfield
Competence and Leadership, what is the difference? Read on...
“What’s the difference between a competent leader and the incompetent ones? The competent leader knows they can make mistakes and it open to criticism – they’re transparent. The incompetent leader believes they can never make a mistake, they’re always right, they can’t handle criticism, and they always speak and never listen to their people or the examine the climate and culture of their organization. We’ve seen great examples of the lack of competency in recent times.” — COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs

Maxwell states that Competence goes beyond words and perhaps he is right, but all in all, Brian Tracy expresses his thoughts below:
Act with purpose, courage, confidence, competence and intelligence until these qualities 'lock in' to your subconscious mind." - Brian Tracy

Took more Covey classes than I can count in my civilian career and I've always liked that quote.
